Upcoming Beer Event: Stone Oakquinox 2102

Stone Brewing Co is hosting its third annual Oakquinox on April 22 from 10AM-4PM.  Are you gonna be there?  I am!  This will be my first year attending Oakquinox, and I’ve heard lots of great things about it.  Oakquinox is Stone’s barrel-aged beer festival, and there are all sorts of great barrel-aged beers available to try (although you’re limited to only 15 3oz tasters).  Check out this amazing beer list:

A Quick Update

Just a quick update about what I’ve been up to lately.

First up, my friend Mike and I brewed a Moose Drool clone last weekend.  It was a sort of spur-the-moment brew day.  Since I decided that we were going to brew only the day before, we ran into a few problems that we had to deal with before and during the brew session.  I’ll be making a full post on that brew day soon.

Next,Addison’s released the contest results online a few days ago.  I’d like to congratulate my good friend Paul D for getting an honorable mention with his imperial IPA.  I didn’t win any awards, but that’s alright.  I almost didn’t enter my Amber Ale (the only homebrew I had ready) since when I tried a bottle the day before the drop off, I thought it was past its prime.  I decided that it didn’t matter if I win, its worth entering just to get the feedback.  I will be getting my feedback sheets this weekend.

Finally, this Saturday Paul and I are getting together at his house for an awesome brew day.  We’re brewing up a Black IPA that he’s calling “Don’t Cross”.  It will be a great brew day, and I’m really looking forward to it!

Time For My First Competition

I got an email from Addison Homebrew Provisions the other day that caught my attention.  They are holding a homebrew competition, and the entry fee is only $2! Since I still have some bottles of my American Amber Ale left, I’m going to enter it into the competition.  I don’t know if I’ll win, but if nothing else, I get the score sheets which will give me some good feedback on my brewing.

If anyone is interested in entering the competition, get two 12 or 22 ounce bottles of your beer to Addison’s by Sunday, September 18.  As mentioned before, the entry fee is $2 per entry.

Ingredients for the Next Batch Have Been Ordered!

I just purchased the kit for the next batch of beer which I will be co-brewing with my friend Brent.  The beer will be Stone’s 12th Anniversary Bitter Chocolate Stout from Beer, Beer, and More Beer.  It will be my first experience with an all-grain batch, and I’m looking forward to learning.  We will be brewing on Brent’s new brew system, so it will also be cool to try that out since I’m planning on making myself something similar.

Welcome to Mountains and Beer!

Welcome to Mountains and Beer!  Here I’ll be talking primarily about my two main hobbies: brewing beer and hiking.

I’m still getting the site set up and organized the way I want, but eventually there will be beer recipes, trail information, and more!
